Why Are Aussie Taxpayers Funding Terrorist Organisations?

Today’s Australian contains a highly disturbing piece by Greg Sheridan detailing how Aussie Taxpayers are funding a proscribed terrorist organisation (paywall protected):

“The Australian government aid agency, Ausaid, gives millions of dollars, through the private charity World Vision, to the Union of Agricultural Work Committees, which works in the Gaza Strip. The problem is the UAWC and its personnel have deep links with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

The PFLP is a proscribed terrorist organisation under the relevant UN list, Australian legislation and the legislation of numerous other countries. It is one of the central progenitors of modern terrorism…

It pioneered aeroplane hijackings but then in the 1980s focused on assassinating Israeli civilians and moderate Arabs…

The Rudd and Gillard governments have doubled Australian aid to the Palestinian territories, and Palestinians in nearby areas, to $70m annually. There is more than a whiff of this being an effort, hopefully forlorn, to placate the Arab vote in the run-up to our ill-advised effort to secure a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

But it is also an example of the wider malaise in our aid program. The decision to wildly increase the aid program, $5 billion now and set to double in the next few years if the Gillard government keeps its promises, means we cannot spend the money properly, productively or prudently.”

With Australian families already suffering under the burden of higher and higher taxes, our foreign aid budget overall is set to double in the next few years.

With overwhelming evidence that foreign aid just doesn’t work, sending more and more of our tax dollars overseas is simply unacceptable.  For them to go to fund groups with known terrorist links is simply a disgrace.

With the Federal Budget coming out next week, the Gillard Government should stop trying to think of getting a UN Security Council seat, and should start thinking about doing its job and representing Australians. To reform our foreign aid program is a public policy no-brainer.

Tim Andrews is the Executive Director of the Australian Taxpayers’ Alliance.

Nick – please read up a bit more on history before you sympathise with terrorists and those who make a living by glorifying murder and mayhem. Israel does not occupy anything west of the river Jordan. What some pro-PLO/PLFP/HAMAS circles and their 5th column may call “occupied territory” is Israel proper. A good starting point to better understand the political and historical situation is here: http://www.mythsandfacts.org/Conflict/mandate_for_palestine/MandateN2%20-%2010-29-07-English.pdf

You really ought to try locating a few facts before you defend Palestinians. Israelis are constantly forced to defend themselves against missile attacks by its hostile surrounding neighbors and many innocents are murdered – by Palestinians. I think you might also find that there are many Palestinian residents in Israel who prefer their way of life to that of their fanatical and hostile homeland. Israel is the only democracy (women in the military, full gay rights) in a sea of militant Islam that wants nothing more than to eradicate it (so much for religious tolerance)….and finally, you could try Googling images for shopping malls in Palestine to find photos of luxurious shopping paradises – not bad for a country supposedly beset with poverty at the insigation of evil Jews.

Who told you that Israel is taking Palistinian land? Perhaps you should try a real history lesson not just propaganda. AND while you are at it find out what Islam is really about. There is also a book called DEAD AID which is enlightening.

Shasha Baron Cohen surely could use this for a sequel to his current hit movie. But in fact it is too sad to be laughed at, when we look at the other side of the coin.

    While $90m of our taxes are used to prop up terrorist regimes in the Middle East, hell-bent on destroying a stouch ally and the only democracy in the region; we bankroll the building of more mosques and madrassas in Afghanistan and Gillard & Co happily splurge $500m on building schools in Indonesia;
rather quietly a independent, non-denominational and community-owned school in her own electorate is fed to the wolfes. 1,200 P-12 students and 220 teachers are loosing their school and lifelihood when Mowbray College Melton in the federal seat of Lalor is forced to closed down tomorrow by the NAB and administrators. While the state govt found $1m to allow at least the VCE students to continue at least to the end of this term (but not the end of the year), everyone else just had 5 days notice to pack up and ship out. All the sitting member for Lalor could do is to sit on her hands and “monitor closely”. This is the real face of Labor’s education revolution.

Ralf, which democracy are you talking about. There is no real democracy in the Middle East. You could stretch it to Turkey, but it isn’t really in the region.
If you are thinking the apartheid state (Israel) is a democracy, then think again. Most of the population is not permitted to vote, on an ethnic base. That is not democracy. Most of the population cannot vote based on religion- that is not a democracy.

Even Arab Jews are ostracised & have lost their land by grabbing Eastern European illegal immigrants.

The terrorists in the Middle East, the ones who started modern terrorism) are the Israelis & yes, we should not give aid to them.

I agree with the main thrust of your campaign but am concerned at your comments about Palestine. The Israelis taught the modern world about terrorism with their Stern Gang who were responsible for the assassination of the British minister of state Walther Guinness in Cairo in 1944. The Israelis’ continuing actions since 1948 in dispossessing the Palestinians of their land are still the main ingredient of the Middle East unrest. There are other major countries in the world who are practising a far greater range of terrorist activities and human rights abuses than the Palestinians.

Wrong on many levels Robert. Firstly, the IRA invented modern terrorism. Political assassinations have always existed. The Palestinians are used as pawns by their Arab neighbors. The UN declared Israel a state in 1947- no Arabs (who now call themselves Palestinians) were evicted, they left of their own accord to wait out the Arab invasion of Israel in safety. Unfortunately for them, the Arab invasion was repelled and the Arabs who left were stranded. They are now being used as leverage by Jordan and Syria- who took 70% of Palestine for themselves and expelled nearly a million Jews who had lived there for thousands of years. So let’s not get all emotional and weep for one side whilst forgetting the other. You could start to get some clarity about this mess by questioning why the UN (who granted statehood to Israel BTW) now holds ‘Palestinians’ as the only refugees who have hereditary title to that status. Yes, the grandchildren and greatgrandchildren born in wealthy countries with full citizenship of those countries are uniquely afforded the status of refugees in perpetuity and get the UN dole and press for right of return just to make trouble- they haven’t the slightest inclination to leave their comfy life and freedom in the West to take up residence in some rubble strewn Sharia oppressed hellhole in the volatile Middle East. Do you really think there are 5 million squeezed into the West Bank and Gaza? Where have all the billions gone? You’ve been had- the whole world has been had.

Yes, I can sympatise with the Palestinians but terrorism only compounds the problem. Funding any form of terrorism supports the war lords in whatever role they cast themselves. We do not have money to spray around so one of our favoured socialist elite can slot their butt into a highly paid UN seat. The UN must be shut down. It is anti democracy and anti the west. Shut the UN down.

If terrorism only compounds the problem, why are we in Afghanistan supporting the USA?
Fact is, the main terrorist activity is being directed from Washington DC. Moslem terrorism is a ruse to take our eyes off the real issue. Yes, there are terrorists in the Middle East, but look at who is funding them and why.

Israel only wants what is rightfully theirs ! Palestinians, Arabs and a multitude of races live and dwell in Israel and are living well under the Israeli Governments initiatives. Israel has every right to defend what is theirs – they only want this tiny bit of land and there are those who want to ‘wipe them off the map’ – after all that the Jews have gone through, the world should be bending over backwards to help them ! Instead, they are being surrounded by enemies on every side. Jews have contributed in amazing ways to our quality of life – here is just a few :
    By Prof. D. Koller
Here is a capsule of accomplishments you may not be fully aware of. I thought you might find these statistics interesting.
The Middle East has been growing date palms for centuries. The average tree is about 18-20 feet tall and yields about 38 pounds of dates a year. Israeli trees are now yielding 400 pounds/year and are short enough to be harvested from the ground or a short ladder.
Israel, the 100th smallest country, with less than 1/1000th of the world’s population, can lay claim to the following:
The cell phone was developed in Israel by Israelis working in the Israeli branch of Motorola, which has its largest development center in Israel. Most of the Windows NT and XP operating systems were developed by Microsoft-Israel.
The Pentium MMX Chip technology was designed in Israel at Intel. Both the Pentium-4 microprocessor and the Centrino processor were entirely designed, developed and produced in Israel.
The Pentium microprocessor in your computer was most likely made in Israel.
Voice mail technology was developed in Israel.
Both Microsoft and Cisco built their only R&D facilities outside the US in Israel.
The technology for the AOL Instant Messenger ICQ was developed in 1996 by four young Israelis.
Israel has the fourth largest air force in the world (after the U. S, Russia and China). In addition to a large variety of other aircraft, Israel’s air force has an aerial arsenal of over 250 F-16’s. This is the largest fleet of F-16 aircraft outside of the U. S.
According to industry officials, Israel designed the airline industry’s most impenetrable flight security. U. S. officials now look to Israel for advice on how to handle airborne security threats.
Israel’s $100 billion economy is larger than all of its immediate neighbors combined. Israel has the highest percentage in the world of home computers per capita.
Israel has the highest ratio of university degrees to the population in the world.
Israel produces more scientific papers per capita than any other nation by a large margin – 109 per 10,000 people — as well as one of the highest per capita rates of patents filed.
In proportion to its population, Israel has the largest number of startup companies in the world. In absolute terms, Israel has the largest number of startup companies than any other country in the world, except the U. S. (3,500 companies mostly in hi-tech).
With more than 3,000 high-tech companies and startups, Israel has the highest concentration of hi-tech companies in the world — apart from the Silicon Valley, U. S.
Israel is ranked #2 in the world for venture capital funds right behind the U. S.
Outside the United States and Canada, Israel has the largest number of NASDAQ listed companies.
Israel has the highest average living standards in the Middle East. The per capita income in 2000 was over $17,500, exceeding that of the UK.
On a per capita basis, Israel has the largest number of biotech startups.
Twenty-four per cent of Israel’s workforce holds university degrees — ranking third in the industrialized world, after the United States and Holland – and 12 per cent hold advanced degrees. Israel is the only liberal democracy in the MiddleEast.
In 1984 and 1991, Israel airlifted a total of 22,000 Ethiopian Jews at risk in Ethiopia, to safety in Israel.
When Golda Meir was elected Prime Minister of Israel in 1969, she became the world’s second elected female leader in modern times.
When the U. S. Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya was bombed in 1998, Israeli rescue teams were on the scene within a day — and saved three victims from the rubble.
Israel has the third highest rate of entrepreneurship — and the highest rate among women and among people over 55 – in the world.
Relative to its population, Israel is the largest immigrant-absorbing nation on earth. Immigrants come in search of democracy, religious freedom, and economic opportunity.
Israel was the first nation in the world to adopt the Kimberly process, an international standard that certifies diamonds as “conflict free.”
Israel has the world’s second highest per capita of new books.
Israel is the only country in the world that entered the 21st century with a net gain in its number of trees, made more remarkable because this was achieved in an area considered mainly desert.
Israel has more museums per capita than any other country.
Medicine… Israeli scientists developed the first fully computerized, no-radiation, diagnostic instrumentationfor breast cancer.
An Israeli company developed a computerized system for ensuring proper administration of medications, thus removing human error from medical treatment. Every year in U. S. hospitals 7,000 patients die from treatment mistakes.
Israel’s Givun Imaging developed the first ingestible video camera, so small it fits inside a pill. Used to view the small intestine from the inside, the camera helps doctors diagnose cancer and digestive disorders.
Researchers in Israel developed a new device that directly helps the heart pump blood, an innovation with the potential to save lives among those with heart failure. The new device is synchronized with the heart’s mechanical operations through a sophisticated system of sensors.
Israel leads the world in the number of scientists and technicians in the workforce, with 145 per 10,000, as opposed to 85 in the U. S., over 70 in Japan, and less than 60 in Germany. With over 25% of its work force employed in technical professions.
Israel places first in this category as well. A new acne treatment developed in Israel, the ClearLight device, produces a high-intensity, ultraviolet-light-free, narrow-band blue light that causes acne bacteria to self-destruct — all without damaging surrounding skin or tissue.
An Israeli company was the first to develop and install a large-scale solar-powered and fully functional electricity generating plant, in southern California’s Mojave desert.
All the above while engaged in regular wars with an implacable enemy that seeks its destruction, and an economy continuously under strain by having to spend more per capita on its own protection than any other country on earth.
And that’s only some of their achievements !

I agree totally with Maree’s comments. Without Israel and the Jews the west will be lost. The West has gone soft and we are lead by poor leaders, we don’t have to look further than Gillard or Rudd. They have carried on from the Keating era when the dollar was devalued. Our wealth under the Liberals have been squandered and wasted under this government and the illegal immigrents, not passengers as we are hearing them being called are and will be a gross burden on our society. Whom will be the losers, the old, the disadvantaged and our children. The winners the government we have now who wants to take away free speach, spy on its people, hold you in bodage doesn’t this strangely sound like the former communist Russia. This government is ruled by some very negative and disturbing people of low character and morally reprehensible. Its all about whats in it for them. I’m an anglo saxon christian and know our days are numbered if we support these self serving leeches.

Unions have done this sort of thing for years without any repercussions. So why am I not surprised at this. Let’s say in a union 20% of its members actually vote liberal; 5% Green; 4% Nationals; 1% independent; 5% informal. That’s 35%. How much money go to those political causes? Zip. That this continues is a BLIGHT on our democracy. If we can’t clean up our own backyard, forget whiningover supporting international terrorism (unions have done it for years anyway, as Sheridan would know).

for 1400years they have killed pillaged and destroyed in the name of allah the moon god and the prophet mohammad
the teachings and the actions of muslims are straight from the quran .as long as we have people in the world that seem to turn a blind eye to islams teachings we will have no peace either in the mid east or the west

I’m sorry but I will not do anything to help the Jews in Israel. Much as I abhor Islam and Sharia and admire the organisation Jews against the Occupation, I am also aware that the Israelis have been systematically evicting Palestinians from their land and stealing it since 1948. Before the Jews started moving, in the main occupants of the area were Bedouins and the land is theirs.
