Cartoonist and Free Speech advocate Bill Leak passes away

The ATA is saddened to learn about the shock passing of commentator and cartoonist, Bill Leak. Through his work, Bill took on many confrontational issues impacting Australia. Whilst it earnt him his share of detractors and even saw him facing censure under 18C, his willingness to tackle these sensitive, highly-charged issues did start important conversations about these problems. It was this sort of thing that helped reinforce his views on the importance of free speech. This is why Bill was always a good supporter and friend of the ATA and participated in the fight to repeal 18C. The media and political landscape will not be the same without his interesting, hard-hitting and of course, humorous cartoons. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues in this difficult time.
