The Australian Taxpayers’ Alliance has made a submission to the Senate Standing Committee on Economics on the future of Australia’s Naval Shipbuilding Future. The submission examines some of the issues that has arisen with recent projects. It calls for the Government to ensure a fair and competitive tender process to provide value for the taxpayer in acquiring high quality ships and submarines. Australian shipbuilders can be competitive against international competitors. They benefit from local supply chains and lower overheads for maintenance over the life-cycle of vessels. So they should be given a fair chance to compete. But the procurement process should avoid being skewed for political interests. When projects are co-opted for political gain, Taxpayers are paying far more than they need to and the economic benefit doesn’t spread as far as politicians would have you believe.
