MEDIA RELEASE: Taxpayers condemn Sydney light-rail cost blowout
The Australian Taxpayers’ Alliance (ATA), a 75,000+ member grassroots advocacy group representing Australia’s taxpayers, today condemned revelations from the NSW Attorney General that the Sydney light rail project’s costs have blown out to $2.3 billion, a full $700 million above its initial costing estimates, due to “mispricings” and “errors”.
“It is unfortunate we are forced to foot the bill for a poorly costed infrastructure project that has been delayed by over 14 months and has disrupted businesses and residents’ lives.” Said Satya Marar, ATA Director of Policy.
“That another $8 million transport contract was subsequently awarded to the same contractors behind Sydney light rail despite the project’s mishaps and ongoing litigation, is a mockery of hardworking NSW taxpayers who deserve to see better stewardship of our money.
“We call on current and future state and federal governments to provide greater transparency and avoid repeating these mistakes in order to ensure fairness for ordinary Australian taxpayers and our families.”
