Taxpayers Welcome Australian Conservatives' War on Stealth Tax

13 February 2019

The Australian Taxpayers’ Alliance (ATA), a 75,000+ member grassroots advocacy group representing Australia’s taxpayers, today welcomed the Australian Conservatives’ policy against stealth taxes, which take millions out of the pockets of hardworking Australian families every year, and urged the major parties and other minor parties to follow their lead.

“Stealth taxes at the state and federal level are a shameless money grab from those of us who deserve it the least." said Satya Marar, ATA Director of Policy. Cumulative and often hidden housing taxes, including GST and fire insurance levy calculated on top of each other rather than on the property price, and a “terrorism insurance levy” which applies to apartment buildings unlikely to ever be terror targets, already add hundreds of thousands to house nationwide. Meanwhile, Aussie workers continue to cop pay cuts every year without knowing it due to state-level payroll taxes and bracket creep. These taxes aren’t just bad because they strip us of our wealth, but because most of us don’t even consciously realise that we’re paying for them.

“We commend the Australian Conservatives’ for adopting the abolition of stealth taxes as one of their primary platforms in the NSW and federal elections, and call on Liberal, Labor and minor parties across the left-right divide to follow suit. Taxes should be levied transparently to foster open and critical debate about how much of our money is being taken off us and where it is going.

“This is not an issue of left vs right. It’s an issue of right vs wrong.”
