Media Release - Taxpayers’ Alliance Calls on Government to support democracy in Venezuela

The Australian Taxpayers’ Alliance (ATA), a 75,000+ member grassroots advocacy group representing Australia’s taxpayers, is calling on Marise Payne, Minister for Foreign Affairs, to follow the example of countries around the world and support Juan Guaidó’s claim to leadership of Venezuela.

ATA Director of Policy Satya Marar said that “Venezuelans have suffered for years under the tyrannical rule of Nicolás Maduro, whose policies have taxed them into poverty and sparked riots in the streets.

“As the democratically elected head of the National Assembly, Juan Guaidó has legitimately been made leader, while Maduro’s grip on power is based on his control of the electoral process and his use of the military to suppress any who resist him.

“Australia is a country which takes pride in our strong democratic values and we have a responsibility to stand up for these values. To watch idly as a dictator defies the will of the people and brutally oppresses them is simply unacceptable. We call on Marise Payne to show the world that Australians will stand up for democracy across the world by recognising Juan Guaidó as leader of Venezuela.”
