Tobacco Tax About Money, Not Health

Aung San Suu Kyi once noted that "the search for scapegoats is an abnegation of all responsibility."

This is precisely the state of affairs when politicians who fail to keep good budgets, fail to cut spending and reduce taxes find ways to punish citizens in order to extract revenue.

Smokers are now known too familiarly as the government's cash cows as The NZ Taxpayer Union's studies reveal tobacco tax income is 3 times bigger than the estimated cost of smoking to our health system.
