Release: Grubby GetUp! Uses Bushfire Deaths For Their Own Ends

The Australian Taxpayers’ Alliance (ATA), the nation’s largest grassroots advocacy group representing taxpayers, today condemned GetUp! for using tragic bushfires to ask for donations for their political campaigns, and called on Australians to donate to bushfire relief charities and fundraising drives that help victims and their families.

“It’s sickening that a lobby group which has received over $500,000 in foreign funding from opaque sources for their political campaigns, is shamelessly using tragic bushfires as an excuse to ask for even more money.” said Satya Marar, ATA Director of Policy.

“Now is not the time to politicise or profit off tragedies. Many victims have lost their homes and loved ones, and community groups engaged in relief work are those who need our support.

“Unlike GetUp! who are scrounging dollars off a tragedy, we are not asking for money. We instead ask that Australians donate funds or provide much-needed supplies like clothes or household appliances to the Lion’s Club of Taree Midcoast Bushfire Relief Fund which directly supports those who need it in their time of need.
