Release: ScoMo bribes electorates with taxpayer funds

The Australian Taxpayers’ Alliance, the nation’s largest grassroots advocacy group representing taxpayers, today questioned the need to spend $100 million of taxpayer funds on sports in light of recently revealed corruption.

“Money doesn’t buy everything, but it does buy power. The Morrison government has strategically used taxpayer funds to secure seats in key electorates.”

“While earmarks lead to negotiations between parties and can often result in a relatively even distribution of funds as pollies, representing smaller sections of the country, compete to secure funding for the people in their own districts,” said ATA Policy Director, Emilie Dye, “when a government official represents the whole of Australia, they have a responsibility to evenly distribute funds.

“We have given our elected officials too long of a leash with taxpayer funds, and now they are using our money in bribes for job security. Like a rebellious teen, ScoMo deserves to have his taxpayer-funded allowance taken away.

“There are enough sports fans in Australia to support the industry without taxpayer money. Politicians in Canberra should not be given so much power to arbitrarily pick who gets taxpayer money because they invariably pick themselves. No one knows what would most benefit a community better than the people living there.”
