Release: Taxpayers Celebrate Netflix Tax’s Death

The Australian Taxpayers’ Alliance, a 75,000+ member grassroots advocacy group representing the nation’s taxpayers, today welcomed the news that the government will not proceed with a tax on digital streaming, colloquially called the ‘Netflix tax.’

“This is great news for Australia’s taxpayers. At a time when Aussies are consuming more through streaming services than ever before, the ‘Netflix tax’ would have been a shameless cash grab.” said ATA Policy Director Satya Marar

“Asking our telcos to support a higher fee for data used by streaming services like Netflix or Stan, knowing that this would be passed on to consumers, was never going to pass the pub test. Australian taxpayers work hard for our money and we don’t deserve to see it siphoned off because the government or wealthy media companies who don’t like competition want to punish us for streaming content from around the world.

“We are pleased to hear that ordinary Australians won’t be slugged with a tax for the crime of enjoying our favourite movies after a hard work week.”
