Release: Taxpayers relax as bureaucrats take day off for Melbourne Cup

The Australian Taxpayers’ Alliance, the nation’s largest grassroots advocacy group representing taxpayers, today celebrated as government bureaucrats left their desks empty to watch the Melbourne Cup giving hard working Australians a short respite.

“If there is any justification for the $2.7 million in taxpayer dollars the government spends on equestrian sports, it is taking bureaucrats out of the office for a few hours,” says ATA Communications Manager, Emilie Dye. “The Melbourne Cup will hopefully distract pollies from coming up with new and creative ways to waste taxpayer money and regulate every Australian sneeze.”

“Today we can all go to the  races without fear, unless you are unfortunate enough to encounter an unsportsmanlike strip-searching cop. Let today be a day of rejoicing and horse racing. Be safe and watch out for unmarked speed cameras as you travel.”
