SCRAP THE INTERNET TAX!

We, the people of Australia, demand the Government end all plans to add a new tax on consumers who choose not to use the NBN.

The NBN rollout has been plagued by issues like slow speed, unreliable connections, sporadic delivery, and unusable landline service. Consumers have been forced to subscribe to a provider, NBN Co, which continually under-performs. Now the ATO plans to charge Australians an extra $7.10 each month for using rival providers to NBN Co. This is a clear attempt to force consumers onto the NBN and then claim it works. This policy will price the poorest Australians out of a functional internet service and onto a failed government substitute.

The ACCC has already flagged concerns about the affordability of the NBN and about the dodgy practices used by NBN Co, such as offering discounts to new subscribers and then withdrawing them. The Government already spent $51billion of my tax dollars to build a subpar broadband system. I don’t want any more of my money going to mopping up the government’s mess.

We insist that any attempt to implement the $7.10 per month tax on those who are not using the NBN service be stopped immediately. It is offensive and unfair to suggest that Australians be taxed for not using an unreliable and poor quality service merely to prop up its existence.
